Based on our emergency vet cost guide (2026): state consult averages, typical totals by emergency type, weekend surcharges of 30 to 50% and public holiday fees up to double. Every case is different and bills change as treatment changes. Ask the clinic for a written estimate.

How this calculator works

The estimate has four parts:

  • Consult: state averages for an after-hours consultation, from about $280 in Tasmania to $360 in the ACT, with regional clinics roughly 20 to 25% cheaper.
  • Treatment and tests: typical total costs for each kind of emergency, from $350 for a wound needing stitches to $7,500 for bloat surgery.
  • After-hours surcharge: weekends typically add 30 to 50% to the consult and public holidays can double it.
  • Hospital nights: $300 to $500 a night on a standard ward, $500 to $800 in intensive care.

We also show a ‘plan for’ figure 35% above the top of the range, because emergency treatment changes as the vet learns more and first estimates often grow.

Common questions

How much is an emergency vet visit in Australia?

The after-hours consult alone is usually $200 to $500. Most emergency visits end up between $800 and $2,500 once tests and treatment are added, and serious cases needing surgery or intensive care can pass $5,000.

Why are emergency vets so expensive?

Emergency hospitals have vets, nurses, imaging and surgery ready around the clock, often for very few patients at 3am. Weekend and public holiday staffing costs more again, which is why surcharges of 30 to 100% are common.

Can I get a payment plan at an emergency vet?

Many clinics accept VetPay or similar finance, and some will discuss a plan if you ask before treatment starts. Read our guide on what to do if you cannot afford an emergency vet bill.

Does pet insurance cover emergency vet bills?

Most accident and illness policies do, minus your excess and the share they do not cover, as long as the condition is not pre-existing and you are past the waiting period.
