How this calculator works

Each year of your cat’s life is costed separately:

  • Getting your cat: shelter cats usually arrive desexed, microchipped and vaccinated, so only the adoption fee and about $330 of setup gear are added. For a breeder kitten we add desexing, the kitten vaccination course and a microchip.
  • Food and litter covers one cat: from about $400 a year on budget dry food up to nearly $2,000 on mostly wet pouches, plus around $290 a year of clumping litter.
  • Routine vet care is about $300 a year, rising from age 10 for senior blood tests and dental checks.
  • Insurance rises 12% a year from age 8.

Emergencies and dental extractions are not included. Both are common in older cats, which is one reason to look at whether insurance would pay for itself.

Common questions

How much does a cat cost per year in Australia?

Most owners spend $1,800 to $3,500 a year on food, litter, routine vet care, parasite prevention and insurance. A healthy indoor cat on dry food with accident-only cover can run closer to $1,500.

Is a cat cheaper than a dog?

Usually, yes. A cat typically costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars a year less than a medium dog, mainly because of food, grooming and boarding. But cats live longer, so the lifetime gap is smaller than people expect.

What is the biggest cost of owning a cat?

Food and litter together. They are the only costs you pay every single month for 15 years or more, so the type of food you choose matters more than almost anything else.

Is it cheaper to adopt a cat from a shelter?

Almost always. Shelter fees usually include desexing, a microchip and first vaccinations, which would cost $500 or more to arrange yourself for a kitten from a breeder.
