AusCostGuides exists to answer one question: what does this actually cost in Australia? Pet care pricing is rarely published in one place, varies a lot between states and clinics, and is hard to compare. These guides pull that scattered information together into plain-English ranges so you know roughly what to expect before you ring around.
Being clear about where the numbers come from matters as much as the numbers themselves, so here is exactly how they are put together — and what they are not.
What our prices are
Every figure on this site is an estimated range compiled from publicly available Australian information. That includes:
- pricing published openly by Australian vet clinics, groomers, boarding kennels and pet services
- listed retail prices from Australian pet retailers such as Petbarn, Pet Circle and Greencross
- guidance and cost information from industry bodies, including the Australian Veterinary Association and the RSPCA
- government and consumer resources such as Moneysmart and the ACCC
- published consumer surveys and pet ownership cost reports
Where a guide draws on a specific source, we link to it directly in the text so you can check it yourself.
What our prices are not
This is the important part, and most cost sites won’t tell you:
- They are not quotes. We don’t contact providers to request custom pricing on your behalf, and no figure here is an offer from any business.
- They are not a survey of every provider. We work from what is published, which skews towards businesses that list their prices publicly.
- They are not a substitute for ringing your own vet or groomer. Your actual cost depends on your animal, your postcode, your provider and what they find on the day.
Treat every number here as a starting point for a conversation, not a price you’re entitled to.
How we handle state and regional differences
Costs shift significantly by location, so where the available information supports it we break ranges down by state and territory, and note the usual gap between metro, outer-suburban and regional pricing. Where we don’t have enough published information to split a figure out reliably, we give a national range instead of inventing a state-by-state table.
What drives the price
A single number is rarely useful on its own, so each guide explains what actually moves it — breed and size, the animal’s age and health, consult time, whether anaesthetic or diagnostics are involved, after-hours and emergency loadings, clinic type and location, and how much follow-up care is needed. Knowing the drivers is what lets you tell a fair quote from a high one.
How the guides are produced
AusCostGuides is a one-person site. Guides are drafted with the help of AI writing tools working from the sources listed above, and every guide is reviewed and published by a person — me. I set the scope of each guide, check that the ranges are sensible against the sources, and I’m accountable for what goes up. If something reads as wrong, it’s mine to fix.
Updates and corrections
Prices move. Each guide carries a “Last updated” date so you can judge how current it is, and guides are revised as sources change. If a figure looks out of date or wrong, tell me and I’ll correct it — corrections from readers are the fastest way this site gets more accurate.
Independence
AusCostGuides does not accept sponsored posts, paid listings, “preferred provider” placements or paid quote referrals. Some pages contain affiliate links (for example to Amazon), which means we may earn a small commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. Affiliate relationships never determine which products appear or what prices we publish.
Our calculators
The calculators on this site — for dog grooming, vet consultations and desexing — apply the same published ranges described above. They produce a ballpark estimate to help you sanity-check a quote. They are not a booking tool and not a price guarantee.
