Estimates use average Australian prices from our dog ownership, food, vet, grooming, boarding and insurance guides (2026). Insurance premiums are assumed to rise 12% a year from age 8 and routine vet costs by half for seniors. Emergencies are not included. Your costs will differ.

How this calculator works

The calculator adds up each year of your dog’s life separately, so costs that change with age are counted properly:

  • Year one includes the purchase or adoption price, desexing, microchipping and registration, the puppy vaccination course and about $400 of starter gear (crate, bed, bowls, lead).
  • Food uses yearly figures for small, medium and large dogs on budget dry, premium dry or raw and fresh diets, plus about $250 a year of treats and chews.
  • Routine vet care (check-ups, boosters, flea, tick and worming) is $400 to $600 a year depending on size, rising by half from age 8 when senior checks and dental work start.
  • Insurance starts at typical Australian premiums and rises 12% a year from age 8, which is roughly how most policies behave.
  • Grooming and boarding are priced per groom and per night, with regional prices about 15% lower than capital cities.

What it leaves out: emergencies. That is deliberate, because nobody can predict them, but you should plan for at least one. Our emergency vet cost calculator shows what a bad night can cost.

Common questions

How much does a dog cost per year in Australia?

Most owners spend $2,000 to $4,500 a year once the first year is over. Food, routine vet care and insurance make up most of it. Large dogs, raw diets and regular professional grooming push you to the top of that range.

How much does a dog cost in the first year?

Usually $3,000 to $6,000, because you pay for the dog itself, desexing, vaccinations, microchipping, registration and setup gear on top of normal running costs. A rescue dog that is already desexed and vaccinated is the cheapest way in.

How much does a dog cost over its lifetime?

For a medium dog living 12 years with premium food, basic insurance and some boarding, the calculator lands around $45,000. A small dog on budget food with no insurance can come in under $25,000, and a large dog with full cover and regular grooming can pass $60,000.

What is the biggest cost of owning a dog?

Food is usually the single biggest line over a lifetime, often 30 to 40% of the total. Insurance comes next if you have it, followed by routine vet care.
