Pet care prices vary a lot across Australia. A vet consult, a dog groom or a night in a kennel can cost noticeably more in Sydney or Canberra than in Hobart or Adelaide. This tool shows the average price of 16 common pet costs in every state and territory, and how yours compares.

Pet Costs by State: Compare Australian Prices
Pick a service and your state to see how your prices compare with the rest of Australia.
State averages come from the state tables in each of our cost guides (2026). Prices vary a lot within each state: inner-city suburbs usually cost more than regional towns.
How this calculator works
Each figure is the state average from the state-by-state table in the matching cost guide on this site. For example, vet consult averages come from our vet consultation cost guide and boarding prices from our dog boarding cost guide.
The national average is the simple average of the eight states and territories. Where a guide gives a range rather than an average, we use the middle of the range.
Averages hide a lot: inner-city clinics and salons usually charge more than outer suburbs and regional towns in the same state. Use this to see the pattern, then check the full guide for ranges.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure in this calculator comes from our own researched guides, which list their sources and are re-checked against current Australian prices. The main one is Vet consultation cost in Australia. Related guides:

Common questions
Which state has the most expensive vet fees?
In our data, NSW and the ACT have the highest average vet consult fees, around $92 to $95, and Tasmania the lowest at about $78.
Why are pet services cheaper in some states?
Mostly rent and wages. Clinics, groomers and kennels in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne pay more for premises and staff, and that flows into prices.
Is pet insurance cheaper in some states?
Yes. Average premiums in our guide range from about $46 a month in Tasmania to $62 in NSW, partly because vet bills, and so claims, are higher in some states.
