I’m Gemma, the founder and researcher behind AusCostGuides. I started this project because I was tired of trying to find out what looking after a pet actually costs in Australia, only to end up on vague overseas articles, sponsored posts, or price ranges that didn’t match a single real quote.
AusCostGuides is now a dedicated guide to the real cost of pet care in Australia, from vet bills, vaccinations and desexing to grooming, boarding, training and the price of buying a particular breed. Whether you have a dog, a cat, a reptile or something more unusual, the goal is the same: help you know what you should be paying before you book, quote or buy.
Every guide on this site is independently researched using real Australian data. That includes:
- quotes from local vets, groomers, breeders and pet services
- industry body and veterinary association guidance
- government and council resources (registration, licences, microchipping)
- submissions from real pet owners
- state and city based pricing differences
- my own price tracking across major cities and regional areas
I don’t accept sponsored posts, paid placements or “preferred provider” deals. If I recommend a product or service, it’s because it genuinely reflects what Australians are paying, not because someone paid to appear here.
How I Research Prices
Each guide follows a consistent research process:
- Collect real quotes from multiple Australian vets, clinics and pet businesses
- Compare metro vs regional pricing
- Review veterinary standards and government or council guidelines
- Note seasonal or demand based price changes
- Update guides regularly to reflect current 2026 pricing
My goal is simple: to give Australian pet owners clear, plain-English pricing information before they book a service, visit the vet or bring home a new pet.
Why I Built This Site
Like most pet owners, I’ve been caught off guard by unexpected bills, an emergency vet visit, a desexing quote, a grooming session that cost far more than I expected. Prices vary wildly across states and suburbs, and most websites don’t explain why.
AusCostGuides exists to fix that. No guesswork. Just real Australian pet costs, explained clearly.
I’m based in Sydney, and I work in a pet store. That means I spend my days talking to owners about what things actually cost, and hearing which products come back through the door. The Animals I Actually Keep
A lot of these guides exist because I was pricing something up for my own animals first. At home I keep bearded dragons, green tree frogs, Coturnix quail, backyard chickens, rabbits, a white bellied caique and a couple of tanks.
That matters for the numbers on this site. When I write about what a bearded dragon setup costs to run, it is because I have bought the enclosure, replaced the UVB tube and paid the power bill. I have had the same Arcadia lighting running for over two years, so I can tell you how it actually holds up, including the parts that annoy me. Where a guide covers an animal I do not keep myself, I say so, and I lean harder on real quotes and published data instead.
